Information About Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient healing art that was re-discovered in the 1800s by a Japanese monk named Mikao Usui.

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force Energy. It is the energy that makes us alive and it is in every living thing. The word Reiki comes from Rei, meaning "universal," and Ki, meaning "vital life force" which is that force that permeates our being. This vital life force energy is also referred to as "Chi" and "Prana."

The frequency of Reiki heals the body level first, then moves to the mental and emotional levels, and finally to the spirit.

Reiki is a form of hands-on healing, and it flows through the practictioner's hands into the client's body, giving every cell the proper energy and balance to heal, harmonize and balance all the way down to the lowest levels.

Many people today employ Reiki as a form of alternative healing for stress, headaches, backaches, stomach aches, insomnia, etc., as well as for emotional and mental issues.

As people are turning to alternative healing methods, they are becoming more aware and open to Reiki and its benefits. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, conducts various experiments on the effects and benefits of Reiki.

What is a Reiki session like?

During a Reiki session the recipient's universal life-force energy (also referred to as bioenergy, Chi, Ki, prana, or light) is increased, accelerating the healing process. The practitioner channels the energy and the recipient takes in this increased flow of universal life-force energy. The energy is utilized due to the recipient's intention for healing and the body's own innate wisdom for knowing what needs to be healed. The practitioner does not use her own energy, but is a channel for the flow of energy.

Hands-on sessions usually begin with the recipient sitting or, preferably, lying face up on a massage table, clothed and in a quiet, private area. She does not have to do anything or attempt to make something happen. The practitioner gently places their hands on, or a few inches above, the recipient's body, in a series of hand positions corresponding to the location of the energy centers, (also known as chakras) and endocrine glands. The practitioner usually starts at the head and face, moving towards the feet and includes any areas that the practitioner or recipient sense may need energy for healing. Once the practitioner has completed the series of hand positions on the front of the recipient's body, the recipient turns over and the practitioner continues with a similar series of hand placements along the recipient's back.

Each hand position is held for approximately two to three minutes. Thus, a full sessions will take about an hour to complete. There is no pressure, manipulation, or massaging of the body. The recipient usually becomes quite relaxed, very quickly, and may even fall asleep during the session. Many people report feeling a sensation of warmth or tingling as the energy moves through their body. Some experience emotions, memories, insights, and may see colors. The body uses the energy for healing whether or not the recipient is aware of any sensations from the energy.

After a session is completed, many people remark that they feel as if they just awoke from a deep sleep. A few minutes later they feel alert, refreshed and energized, balance and relaxed. This feeling can last a few days after a single session, depending upon one's daily regime and stress levels. Many people report sleeping better and rapid improvement in areas needing healing.

For chronic, long-term problems, it is recommended that the person receive a one-hour Reiki session, three days in a row. This allows a greater buildup of energy for healing a problem that has been present for months or years. The recipient may experience a brief aggravation of symptoms, or a "cleansing" period following the three days of Reiki sessions. The practitioner may recommend a one-hour Reiki session, on a weekly basis, until the initial problem or symptom has cleared. The recipient knows when this occurs. It is important that the recipient of energy work be aware of behaviors that cause or aggravate the initial problem, and that they make healthy changes in their behaviors.

COST

Anne, Reiki Master, gives one- hour sessions for $75.00 per session, and half hour sessions for $55.00 per session in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Gift certificates are also available.

The History of Reiki
(Courtesy of Hans van Leeuwen, http://www.ReikiUniversalHealing.com)

Mikao Usui - Founder of the Usui System of Natural Healing, also known as Reiki

Origin of Reiki

The Reiki system of healing originated in Japan in the early 20th century. Although Reiki, the energy, may have been known and worked with before in history, the Reiki system as we know it originated in the early 20th century. Mikao Usui was a Budhist monk who was interested in the miracle healings which were performed in ancient times. He believed that these healings had indeed occurred, but wanted to know how it had been done. In Tibet he studied sanskrit documents in which was explained about healing energies. He now had discovered how these energies could heal, but he did not have the ability to use these energies.

Usui went to a mountain in Japan and meditated there for a period of three weeks. During this period he experienced energies in his body and he realized that these were healing energies. He then founded the Usui System of Natural Healing and started to pass on the gift of working with the healing energies. Usui initiated many students to work with the Reiki energy. Mikao Usui´s successor Chujiro Hayashi initiated Hawayo Takata, who initiated 22 Reiki Masters in North America in the 1970's and 1980's.

In recently published books with translations of Usui works we can read what Mikao Usui thought about the teaching of Reiki.

"From time immemorial, it has often happened that someone who has found an original, secret law has either kept it for himself or only shared it with his descendents....However, this is an old-fashioned custom from the last century, and therefore outdated. In times like these, the happiness of humanity is based on working together and the desire for social progress. This is why I would never allow anyone to possess Reiki just for himself! Our Reiki Ryoho is something absolutely original and can not be compared with any other spiritual path in the world. This is why I would like to make this method freely available to the public for the well-being of humanity. Each of us has the potential of being given a gift by the divine, which results in the body and soul becoming unified. In this way (with Reiki), a great many people will experience the blessing of the divine. First of all, our Reiki Ryoho is an original therapy, which is built upon the spiritual power of the universe. Through it, the human being will first be made healthy, and then peace of mind and joy in life will be increased. Today we need improvements and restructuring in our lives so that we can free our fellow human beings from illness and emotional suffering. this is the reason why I dare to freely teach this method in public." - Mikao Usui, 1925.

Recent Developments in Reiki

Reiki was introduced in the Western world in the 1970's in North America. Since then the number of Reiki practitioners and teachers has slowly increased. During the last decades several Reiki Masters have developed new Reiki systems based on the original Usui system. Changes were made because of new insights in the way of initiations and healing methods. I believe that, although the energy is the same in all these systems, the experience of the Reiki energy that is channeled can be different. The initiation is the process in which the body is prepared for working with the energies. I think that when the body (physical, emotional, spiritual) is better prepared it will be able to channel the Reiki energies in a more efficient way, compared to a body that is not fully adjusted and prepared. During the initiation the student is attuned to the Reiki energy, this can include emotional, physical and spiritual healing and balancing of the body.

The Reiki system is not the only factor that determines how the body is attuned to the Reiki energy. The physical, emotional and spiritual state of a person influences the efficiency of the channeling of Reiki energy. Without doing Reiki initiation courses we can all channel Reiki energy, but usually this is done with a low efficiency because we are not attuned to the energies. Remember that Mikao Usui, the founder of modern Reiki, did not receive an attunement as we receive it nowadays. During his meditations he received the gift of channeling the Reiki energy. As we grow spiritually we become more aware of the 'non-physical' world, and the Reiki energy is a part of that. Choosing a Reiki system is a matter of following your feelings.

What is a treatment like?

A Reiki treatment is a simple, non-intrusive and powerful process. The Reiki practitioner channels the energy to the patient by either positioning the hands just above the body of the patient or by distance healing in which the patient can be at home or any place. The healing energies are not bound by space nor time and give the same results in both 'hands on' and distance healing. The Reiki practitioner can direct the energies to a specific place or problem in the body, and the energies also go to where the body is most out of balance. The healing energies go to the source of the problem and not just the manifesting symptoms. The number of treatments depends upon the cause of the problem and the amount of energy needed to restore the well-being. Acute problems often respond quickly to treatment; chronic problems may take a longer period of time to be healed.

The sensations felt when receiving Reiki energy can be different for different people. Many people feel a pleasant sensation of warmth or gentle tingling in the treated area. A sense of relaxation and well-being can be felt as stress and tension are released, and the energy in the body is balanced. Results of a Reiki treatment can be felt immediately or after a longer period of time, depending on the nature of the problem.

Reiki treatments do not have negative side effects. It is a completely safe and natural way of treating disease. Reiki balances the body on physical, emotional and spiritual levels; it restores physical health, releases negative emotions, reduces stress, and brings feelings of inner peace and wholeness. Reiki can be safely used when the patient is using medication; the healing energies accelerate healing and reduce negative side effects of orthodox medical care.

How does Reiki work?

Everything in our universe is made up entirely of energy. Einstein formulated this knowledge in his well known equation E=mc2 (Energy=mass times speed of light squared). Light is energy, our emotions are energy, our thoughts are energy, and even our physical bodies and the physical world surrounding us are energy. When we keep that in mind it will be easier to understand how the healing energy of Reiki works. Our body is not only the physical body that we observe; we are made of energy and the physical body is the part of us that we can see. We are not a physical body that also has an energy field around and inside it; we are beings of energy, with energy fields that we normally can not see, and a physical body (a dense form of energy) as a part of the whole body. Besides the energy that we obtain through eating, drinking and breathing, we also obtain energy through are energy fields. This energy is very important for our body, without it our physical body would not be able to exist.

Knowing that our body is made up of energy fields, with the physical body as one of these, we can explore the origin of disease. What we experience as diseases (mental, emotional, physical) are the manifestations of imbalances in our body. The source of the problem can often be found in imbalances in our energy fields. What can cause these imbalances? Our thoughts, emotions and attitudes play an important role in the fitness of our body. Thoughts and emotions are energies, and when we have pessimistic and negative thoughts we create imbalances in our body. We often repress many of our thoughts and emotions because it is often taught to us in our society. We have been taught that we should not show certain emotions, or that we should feel guilty of certain feelings. By not expressing these thoughts, emotions and feelings we build blockages in our energy system, which can result in a disturbed flow of energies through our body. Other causes of imbalances in our body can be found in our environment. Nowadays we are surrounded by electronic devices which generate electro magnetic fields (EMF) that can negatively affect our bodies. Scientific research has shown in many cases that exposure to EMF´s can cause disease. Other factors in our environment which can negatively affect our energy system can be micro-waves, x-rays, radioactive radiation, radio waves, mobile telephones, television and computer screens.

Reiki works on the energetic level. Most healing methods nowadays work only on the physical level, but Reiki works on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels. Our body is a complex system with different levels interacting with each other. If a treatment is done that only works on one level, the healing is not complete. True healing must be done at all levels, and that is what Reiki does. If healing is only done on the physical level temporary results can be obtained, but the underlying cause is not treated. Reiki balances on all levels where our energy flows are blocked. It helps to release underlying thoughts and emotions that caused the disease, and it heals the physical symptoms of the disease.

Research and use of Reiki in hospitals

During the last three decades the number of Reiki practitioners in the Western world has steadily increased. Especially in North America, where Reiki was first introduced by Reiki Masters from Japan, there are many Reiki practitioners and many people take Reiki treatments. Reiki is practiced by a rapidly increasing number of nurses in hospitals all over the world. Numerous hospitals have included Reiki in their health care services. Nursing personnel and doctors are stimulated to do Reiki courses and practice Reiki with their patients. There are hospitals that prefer to hire nursing personnel who are qualified Reiki practitioners.

In 1998 the United States Congress established the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in response to the growing interest and use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States. A published survey shows that the number of Americans using an alternative therapy rose from about 33 percent in 1990 to more than 42 percent in 1997. In addition, Americans spent more than $27 billion on these therapies in 1997, exceeding out-of-pocket spending for all U.S. hospitalizations. A survey published in 1994 reveals that more than 60 percent of doctors from a wide range of specialties recommended alternative therapies to their patients at least once. In addition, 47 percent of the doctors in this study reported using alternative therapies themselves. Indeed, 75 out of 117 U.S. medical schools offered elective courses in CAM or included CAM topics in required courses, according to an article published in 1998. Another survey found that people used CAM not only because they were dissatisfied with conventional medicine, but because these health care alternatives mirrored their own values, beliefs, and philosophical orientations toward health and life.

The scientific world has started research in the energetic fields of our body, and the effects of alternative healing methods on the body. In scientific studies several conditions have been succesfully treated with Reiki, and several physiological effects of Reiki have been observed. The following examples are only few of the studies performed in numerous hospitals and universities.

Dr. Ahlam Mansour, of the College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan, Canada received a research grant from the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative (CBCRI) to conduct a feasibility study of the effects of Reiki on the level of anxiety, physical problems, spiritual well-being, and complete blood counts in breast cancer patients undergoing their initial (AC) chemotherapy. Scientifical publications can be found in the online databases of Medline from the National Library of Medicine. The Medline databases can be accessed for free at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/. Here are some examples of scientific publications related to Reiki.

The purpose of this study was to test the standardization procedures developed by our research team for placebo Reiki, before going ahead and conducting our planned full-scale randomized and placebo-controlled Reiki efficacy study. The placebo practitioners were trained in Reiki by the study Reiki Master and the principal investigator, but were not initiated. The belief in Reiki is that only practitioners that are initiated could give Reiki, thus making it possible to have a placebo arm in efficacy studies. The findings of the study indicate that the developed standardization procedures were successful because none of the final participants in round 4 (4 breast cancer patients and 4 observers) could differentiate between the identity of placebo and Reiki practitioners. It was concluded based on these findings that it is safe to go ahead and conduct the planned randomized 3-arm Reiki efficacy clinical trial. It is recommended that scholars interested in Reiki research could incorporate our techniques to strengthen their designs by adding a placebo arm.

Olson K, Hanson J, 1997. "Using Reiki to manage pain: a preliminary report." Cancer Prevention Control 1997, June, Vol.1(2): pages 108-13.

The purpose of this study at the Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton, Canada was to explore the usefulness of Reiki as an adjuvant to opioid therapy in the management of pain. Since no studies in this area could be found, a pilot study was carried out involving 20 volunteers experiencing pain at 55 sites for a variety of reasons, including cancer. All Reiki treatments were provided by a certified second-degree Reiki therapist. Pain was measured using both a visual analogue scale (VAS) and a Likert scale immediately before and after the Reiki treatment. Both instruments showed a highly significant (p < 0.0001) reduction in pain following the Reiki treatment.

Surgical patients at Columbia/HCA Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire are given the option of a 15 minute pre- and post-surgery Reiki treatment. In 1998 more than 870 patients participated. As a result there was less use of pain medications, shorter lengths of stay, and increased patient satisfaction. This article discusses how this program was set up. Plans for the future include documentation of the benefits and the further use of complementary therapies.

This article discusses the steps taken to fulfill this request and to develop requirements for allowing complementary healers in the operating room.

Bullock, Marlene, 1997. "Reiki: A Complementary Therapy for Life," The American Journal of Hospice & Palliative Care. 1997 Jan/Feb; 14(1): pp. 31-3.

This article describes the treatment of a 70 year-old man with an aggressive cancer using palliative radiation and medication, and Reiki. Through her hospice experiences the author concludes that, "Some general trends seen with Reiki include: periods of stabilization in which there is time to enjoy the last days of one's life, a peaceful and calm passing if death is imminent; and relief from pain, anxiety, dyspnea and edema. Reiki is a valuable complement in supporting patients in their end-of-life journey, enhancing the quality of their remaining days."

Motz, Julie, 1998. "Hands of Life". New York; Bantam Books, 1998

Reiki was used in the operating room of the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. The New York Times magazine reported about the use of Reiki during open-heart surgeries and hart transplantations performed by Dr. Mehmet Oz. None of the 11 heart patients treated with Reiki by Reiki Master Julie Motz experienced the usual postoperative depression, the bypass patients had no postoperative pain or leg weakness; and the transplant patients experienced no organ rejection.

"Reiki Technique Study to Control Chronic Pain in Diabetic Neuropathy", The Department of Public Relations & Marketing Communications, University of Michigan, http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/topics/alt03.htm

The University of Michigan Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research Center is studying Reiki, to determine whether chronic pain in diabetic neuropathy can be controlled, thereby increasing the patients' quality of life. This is one of the first studies of this technique funded by the National Institutes of Health, and has the full support of the University of Michigan Health System.

The Reiki Clinic at the Tucson Medical Center in Arizona has a team of Reiki practitioners who give Reiki to patients in their rooms. The program first began in the Cancer Care Unit, but has since expanded to many other areas in the hospital. Conditions treated at the Reiki Clinic include cancer, pain, chronic conditions, postoperative surgery, and they also deal with childbirth. What can be treated?

Any disease, physical, emotional and mental, can be treated with Reiki. Reiki energy heals at all levels in our body and goes to the source of any problem. The results of Reiki treatments depend on the nature of the problem and on the patient. Every person experiences the Reiki energies in a unique way. Reiki has been used succesfully to treat numerous diseases, injuries, chronic conditions, stress, or any kind of imbalance of the body. With Reiki it is not only possible to heal physical injuries or diseases, but also mental problems like stress, depression or fatigue can be succesfully treated. Reiki can also help to enhance spiritual awareness. The Reiki energy always works for the higher good of the patient, and will not go against the will of the patient. The number of treatments needed depends on the nature of the particular disease or discomfort. Chronic diseases may take longer to be healed than physical injuries for example. Reiki can not only be used to heal one self or other people, but also for animals, plants, food; in short for all living material. A Reiki practitioner is not a healer but only channels the healing energy to the recipient. Reiki accelerates healing and it may happen that your body needs less medicine after a Reiki treatment. A Reiki practitioner does not diagnose disease. If you receive regular medical treatment, always consult your doctor in case you feel like your prescription or treatment can be changed or reduced after receiving Reiki treatments.

Where can I get a Reiki treatment?

Reiki treatments can be done in two ways, 1) 'hands on' sessions, and 2) distance sessions. Both methods work perfectly well, and one is not better than the other. One might prefer to be present with the Reiki practitioner, or one might prefer to be at home receiving the treatment at distance. During the Reiki initiations the Reiki practitioner has learned how to send the healing energy to a patient at distance. Distance healing is as important as hands on healing in the Reiki healing system. The results obtained with both ways of Reiki healing are the same.

I do distance Reiki treatments myself in the following manner. After I am contacted with a request for a Reiki treatment we schedule the treatment. The recipient can choose if she/he would like to receive the distance Reiki treatment on a particular date and time, or can leave it up to me when to do the distance Reiki treatment. Another possibility is to arrange an online meeting to do the Reiki treatment. The recipient does not have to do anything special to receive the Reiki energies. If for any reason the recipient prefers not to tell me the disease or discomfort then that is no problem. The Reiki energy goes to the problem itself, I am only a channel for the energy. However, if the recipient can indicate if the problem is physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, or a certain area of the body, that might help in the process of channeling the energy. After the treatment is done there is the possibility to talk or write about possible feelings or emotions that were experienced. If desired, the treatment can be repeated. There are diseases or conditions that need only one treatment, while others may need more treatments. The recipient chooses how many treatments are desired and can stop at any time.

MAGNIFIED HEALING

An ancient healing modality was introduced to earth in 1983. This healing was previously used only in the higher dimensions by Ascended Masters to assist themselves, the Masters on earth, and mankind under special divine dispensation. In 1992, under the direct intervention and inspiration of Lady Master Kwan Yin, Magnified Healing of the GOD MOST HIGH OF THE UNIVERSE was brought forth into its expanded form for the spiritual advancement of Humanity and the Earth.

Magnified Healing establishes a constant flow of energy from your heart to the Source, the GOD MOST HIGH OF THE UNIVERSE, through all of the Spiritual Centers, down to the Diamond at the Center of the Earth. The link spirals and brings a deep state of grace pulsing forth from the Source, laying the very foundation for the Ascension process.

"Many forms of healing are "healer focused" meaning that the seeker must go to a physician, priest, temple, shaman or other place to receive healing".*

In most vibrational healing methods, the healing is channeled and directed through the healer. In Magnified Healing, the practitioner creates the energy with GOD MOST HIGH OF THE UNIVERSE and becomes Magnified Healing.

* Excerpt from "Magnified Healing...A New (Ancient) Perspective" by Jan Bennett

To our knowledge, there are over 21,000 Initiates of this powerful and universal method in over 48 states in the U.S. as well as in 51 countries.
